Question:
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome presents with...
A. difficulty breathing
B. limited shoulder and arm AROM `
C. paresthesia in the arm
D. thoracic vertebral pain
Answer "C" is correct.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) results from a nerve compression by C5 to T1 vertebrae and/or the clavicle by boney or arthritic pathology.
It can also be caused by nerve entrapment of the brachial plexus by soft tissue related to the scalenes and pectoralis minor.
Pressing on the nerves by either compression or entrapment will cause an interruption of smooth nerve flow (paresthesia) causing a variety of abnormal sensations including "pins and needles", shooting pain, dull aches and numbing in the arm at various locations.
There are assessment tests that MTs can learn to give us information about whether our client may suffer from this condition including the Roos Stress Test and Adson’s Maneuver.
There are other problems that may cause similar types of sensations, so it is very helpful to have orthopedic tests to guide us in developing our treatment plan.
